Undercover Business Valuation

In the current season of The Discovery Channel’s Undercover Billionaire, three self-made entrepreneurs are given 90 days and $100 to build a million-dollar business in a town they don’t know and where they are also not known.

Season 2 brought the ambition and drive of Monique Idlett-Mosley to none other than our own Tacoma, Washington, and eventually into our own Doty Group conference room.

According to her LinkedIn bio, Monique is the “Founder and Managing Partner of Reign Venture Capital (RVC), an early stage investment firm that focuses on women and minority-led startups.” She also “served as CEO to Mosley Brands and Mosley Music Group, home to a multi-platinum roster of artists, including iconic producer Timbaland, One Republic, Nelly Furtado, and others.

After working her way into the community by making connections and assessing the needs of the market, Monique applies her business-smarts and people-smarts to begin Rooted, a venture intended to make it easier for residents of Tacoma to attain locally-sourced nourishment. She also provides useful insights and observations that give the viewer a valuable perspective when it comes to nurturing business relationships and serving community.

On the way to the finish line, she worked with the Tacoma Urban League, whose mission is “to assist African Americans and other underserved urban residents in the achievement of social equality and economic independence.” Tacomans may also recognize her surroundings when she makes appearances at the Point Ruston Public Market, where she met Alex Fardell and began a collaboration with Fardell Farms. Monique’s journey is unique in comparison to the others’ this season, as she highlights many of our community’s resources available to entrepreneurs, such as Spaceworks, coworking spaces like The Pioneer Collective, and even Tacoma Public Library.

As Monique nears the end of the challenge, she must find out the value of the business she built, which is where Shelley Drury, Doty Group Shareholder and Director of Litigation and Valuation comes into the picture. As a part of the valuation of Monique’s venture, Shelley was introduced to the brand and witnessed its impact on the community before welcoming her to The Doty Group’s downtown office for the big reveal.

“I thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet Monique and experience the Rooted lifestyle. Every member of the film crew and team that Monique assembled to build her business was a pleasure to work with,” Shelley shared with our team.

Did she build a million-dollar company in 90 days?

“It’s confidential!” Shelley exclaims. She can’t share any more details until the final episodes are out. So be sure to tune in with us and catch up for the upcoming final episodes - one new episode per week released on Wednesday for the next 3 weeks. They are currently streaming on Discovery+ until it hits the tube April 20.
